Omega-3 are a family of polyunsaturated straight-chain hydrocarbons that have a double bond in the third carbon-carbon bond (n-3) when counted from the methyl end of the molecule. Only plants have the ability to add double bonds in the n-3 position. There is speculation that fatty acids belonging to the n-3 family, specifically alpha-linolenic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, exhibit essential fatty acid activity in dogs and cats.

The vast majority of plant-based oils are in the form of Omega-6 fatty acids, which are already over-supplied in our pets’ diets. Flaxseeds and a few other seeds and nuts also contain the Omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA has beneficial effects of its own, particularly on skin and coat health. However, after weaning, dogs and cats (and humans) cannot convert more than 1-2% of it into EPA and none to DHA (the essential fatty acids that are so important to health)(5). Only marine oils contain these particular Omega-3s in a completely bioavailable form.Understand cat dominance. Cats are not pack animals. To function well, a hunting pack has a leader and the leader decides what the pack will do, the beta will give advice, the others follow and the omega plead and beg to be privileged with remaining in the pack. Dogs can be comfortable in the omega position. To a dog, being the omega in a great high pack better than all other packs is far better than being the alpha of a miserable pack of one.Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential in the diet of dogs and cats due to an inability to produce these fatty acids from others consumed in the diet. The essential omega-6 fatty acids are linoleic acid (dogs and cats) and arachidonic acid (cats only). The essential omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, and DHA. Animals in different life stages have different requirements for these fatty acids. For example, a reproducing cat requires more arachidonic acid than a spayed or neutered cat, and a developing animal requires more DHA than an older animal. This is due to the different roles played by the fatty acids. Linoleic acid and alpha-linoleic acid are only found in plant-based oils such as corn oil, canola oil, or soybean oil. Arachidonic acid is found in the greatest concentration in animal fats, while EPA and DHA are found in the highest concentrations in fish oil.Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are the main series of fatty acids which are of interest to us. Linoleic acid and arachidonic acid are both omega 6 fatty acids. While most of the omega 3 fatty acids are not currently recognized as essential, the correct ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids in the diet has in pets.
